I can't be certain, since I don't work for Outback and haven't reverse engineered their protocol, but I don't expect that the pings do data collection. They are normally the shortest possible messages to verify that a device is online. Separate messages most likely respond to pings periodically to dump the stored data from the MATE3. Doing otherwise might jam the communication channel with everyone doing it at once and no flow control and as it is I've seen the data collection get behind a day or so probably taking care of so many systems after an outage & trying to catch up.

Online help should describe things like
    Grid-Zero vs Mini-Grid and
Explain what to adjust when your battery drops and the grid is not kicking in
(for people who expected their electrician to have all that up to work at
a certain SOC until they found their battery discharging low by checking
OPTICSRE to be able to quickly and confidently make the changes
without downloading and wading through the manuals - but if you make a
wizard to do it, make sure it gives the list of all settings before and after
the change and offers an undo-history or restore feature before and after
    confirmation)
